This week Brian and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. Eighteen years. Honestly, where has the time gone?
To celebrate, we spent a few days in one of our favourite places in Dorset, staying at a wonderful dog-friendly hotel just a few miles from the beach. Normally, we would spend our time exploring the beautiful local footpaths with Daisy, but the weather had other ideas. It was simply too hot for her to be out walking for long, so instead we slowed down, found shady spots, enjoyed the sea breeze and spent time by the coast.
As we sat looking out to sea, I found myself thinking about milestones, memories and the journeys we create around the moments that matter most.
We’ve got two years, which sounds like plenty of time, but the reality is that if you want to do something truly special, planning ahead is always a good idea.
The most memorable journeys often take time to create. The best hotels, unique experiences and dream itineraries can require forward planning, especially if you’re travelling at popular times of the year or celebrating a special occasion.
Of course, part of the excitement is having something to look forward to. The anticipation, the planning and the conversations about where you might go are all part of the journey.
Because that’s the thing about milestone trips. They’re not just holidays. They’re experiences we look forward to, moments we treasure and memories that stay with us long after we return home.
Why Milestone Trips Matter
One of the things I love most about what we do is helping clients plan these special journeys. Because despite what many people assume, most of our clients aren’t booking extraordinary holidays every few months.
Yes, we have clients who are fortunate enough to travel extensively, and we love helping them discover more of the world. But they are very much the exception. The majority of the incredible itineraries we create have a story behind them.
They’re celebrating 25, 30, 40 or even 60 years of marriage. A milestone birthday. Retirement after decades of hard work. A lifelong dream that has finally become possible. Or perhaps a family holiday bringing different generations together while everyone is still able to travel.
These aren’t impulse purchases. They are journeys that are often planned a year, sometimes even two years, in advance. And that’s why the detail matters.
When you’re celebrating something important, the holiday needs to feel right from the very beginning. The flights need to work, the hotels need to suit your style, the pace of the itinerary needs to reflect how you want to travel, and those little touches need to be considered.
Because those are often the things that turn a good holiday into an unforgettable one.
The Top Six Milestone Trips Our Clients Dream About
Over the years, there are certain journeys that consistently appear on our clients’ wish lists when they’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
They are all very different experiences, but they have one thing in common. They create memories that last far beyond the journey itself.
- A luxury cruise
For many people, a luxury cruise is the ultimate way to celebrate. Whether it’s exploring multiple destinations without unpacking every few nights, enjoying exceptional dining and service, or simply waking up somewhere new each morning, cruises offer a wonderful balance of adventure and relaxation. For couples celebrating a special anniversary or retirement, they can be the perfect way to mark a new chapter.
- Canada, including the Rocky Mountaineer and Alaska
Canada continues to capture the imagination of so many travellers. The combination of dramatic landscapes, incredible wildlife and the unforgettable journey aboard the Rocky Mountaineer makes it a destination that feels truly special. Many of our clients combine this with an Alaska cruise, creating a journey filled with breathtaking scenery and experiences they’ll talk about for years to come.
- South Africa and safari
A safari is one of those experiences that many people dream about for years before finally making it happen. There is something incredibly special about waking up in the heart of the African wilderness, watching the sunrise over the landscape and seeing wildlife in its natural environment.
South Africa is particularly popular because it offers such incredible variety. A safari experience can be combined with world-class food and wine, beautiful scenery, coastal stays and vibrant cities such as Cape Town.
- Australia and New Zealand
For many people, Australia or New Zealand has been a dream for decades. Perhaps it’s visiting family, exploring places they’ve always read about, or finally making that long-haul adventure happen after years of saying “one day”.
- Japan
Japan has become one of the most requested destinations among our clients. It offers such a fascinating contrast of ancient traditions and modern innovation, from peaceful temples and beautiful gardens to incredible food, culture and landscapes.
It’s a destination that appeals to those looking for something genuinely different.
- The Indian Ocean
When clients dream of relaxation and luxury, the Indian Ocean is often high on the list. The Maldives remains a favourite for those looking for turquoise waters, beautiful beaches and time to completely switch off, while Mauritius offers a wonderful combination of luxury, culture, scenery and experiences. Both destinations create the kind of memories that stay with you long after you return home.
The Destination Is Only Part of The Story
What makes these trips special isn’t actually the destination. It’s the reason behind taking them.
It’s the anniversary celebration. The birthday. The retirement. The family time. The dream that has finally moved from the “one day” list into reality. That’s why we love planning milestone trips.
We’re not just arranging flights, hotels and experiences. We’re helping create memories that will be talked about for years to come.
Looking back on our own anniversary, I’m reminded that time really does pass incredibly quickly.
The things we remember most aren’t the possessions we collect along the way. They’re the places we’ve been, the experiences we’ve shared and the moments we’ve created together. That’s why milestone trips matter. They’re not just holidays. They’re chapters in our lives.
