Last weekend, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Not Just Travel Summer Conference, sharing my passion for luxury cruising with more than 300 travel consultants and supplier partners.
It’s always a privilege to be asked to speak at industry events, particularly on a subject I genuinely love. Preparing for the presentation also gave me the chance to reflect on why luxury cruising has become such an important part of my business, and more importantly, why my experience benefits the clients who trust me to plan their holidays.
After all, if you’re thinking about booking a luxury cruise, why does it matter that I was standing on stage talking about it?
Luxury Cruising Has Never Offered More Choice
Twenty years ago, choosing a luxury cruise was relatively straightforward. Today, there is an incredible range of options, and that’s fantastic news for travellers.
Cruise lines such as Silversea, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Explora Journeys all offer exceptional holidays. Alongside them, cruise lines including Oceania and Azamara provide what many describe as a luxury-light experience, offering many of the touches clients love while sitting slightly differently within the market.
If you spend an evening browsing their websites, you’ll quickly notice some common themes. Beautiful suites, outstanding restaurants, attentive service, elegant surroundings and all-inclusive experiences feature heavily across every brand.
The truth is they’re not wrong. They all deliver excellent cruises. The challenge is understanding which one is right for you.
That’s Where Experience Makes the Difference
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to sail with many of the world’s leading luxury cruise lines. I’ve stayed on board their ships, eaten in their restaurants, experienced their service and explored the destinations they visit. I’ve also learnt that every cruise line has its own personality.
Even within the same cruise line, individual ships can feel very different. Some have a wonderfully traditional feel, while others offer a more contemporary style of luxury. Some create a lively social atmosphere, while others are quieter and more intimate. Some place greater emphasis on destination immersion, while others focus on life on board.
These are the things you won’t discover from a brochure. They come from experience.
It’s one of the reasons I’ve been fortunate to become one of the UK’s leading sellers of luxury cruises. Clients know they aren’t simply receiving product knowledge. They’re benefiting from genuine first-hand experience and honest advice.
Booking Direct Isn’t Always the Best Option
One question I’m asked regularly is whether clients should book directly with the cruise line. It’s a fair question. The answer might surprise you.
We have price parity with the luxury cruise lines we work with, which means you’ll pay exactly the same whether you book through me or book directly with the cruise line itself. So why book through a travel expert?
Because if you ring Silversea, they’ll recommend a Silversea cruise. If you contact Regent Seven Seas Cruises, they’ll recommend Regent. If you speak to Explora Journeys, they’ll tell you why Explora is the right choice. And they should. They know their own product incredibly well. What they can’t do is compare themselves with every other luxury cruise line. They can’t tell you that another cruise line may actually suit your style of travel better.
That’s where independent advice becomes invaluable.
The Conversation Always Starts With You
When a client gets in touch with me, we don’t begin by talking about ships. We begin by talking about them.
- What have they enjoyed on previous holidays?
- Are they celebrating a special occasion?
- Do they enjoy fine dining or is destination more important?
- Would they prefer a smaller, intimate ship or something with a little more atmosphere?
- Do they like dressing for dinner or would they rather keep things relaxed?
- How important are included shore excursions, premium drinks, Wi-Fi or butler service?
The answers to those questions help me build a picture of the experience they’re looking for.
Only then do I recommend a cruise line and, just as importantly, a particular ship. Sometimes that’s Silversea. Sometimes it’s Regent. Sometimes it’s Explora Journeys or Seabourn. Occasionally, the best recommendation is Oceania or Azamara because they offer exactly the experience my client is looking for. There isn’t one cruise line that’s right for everyone. There is simply the one that’s right for you.
Luxury Is About Value, Not Just Price
Luxury cruising often carries a perception that it’s expensive. Of course, it’s an investment, but I think it’s more helpful to look at the value than simply the headline price.
For clients who enjoy the finer things in life, luxury cruising can represent exceptional value. Depending on the cruise line, your fare may include premium drinks, speciality dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi, entertainment and, in some cases, even shore excursions and laundry.
When you compare that with paying for each of those extras separately on another holiday, many people are pleasantly surprised by the overall value.
Luxury isn’t about spending more for the sake of it. It’s about enjoying a holiday where the details have already been taken care of, allowing you to relax from the moment you step on board.
It’s About Confidence
Many of the luxury cruises I arrange aren’t ordinary holidays. They’re retirement celebrations, milestone birthdays, wedding anniversaries or journeys that clients have dreamed about for years. Often they’ve been saving towards them for a long time. That’s why choosing the right cruise matters so much.
I never feel under pressure to recommend one cruise line over another because my loyalty is to my client, not to a particular brand.
My job is to listen carefully, understand what’s important and recommend the holiday I genuinely believe will give them the best experience. Sometimes that recommendation confirms what they were already considering. Sometimes it introduces them to a cruise line they hadn’t even thought about.
Why Speaking at the Conference Meant So Much
Standing in front of more than 300 travel professionals reminded me how fortunate I am to work in an industry I genuinely love.
Luxury cruising continues to evolve, with exciting new ships, new itineraries and new experiences arriving every year. Keeping up to date isn’t just something I enjoy. It’s an important part of making sure my clients receive the very best advice.
Every ship I sail on, every training event I attend and every conference I speak at adds to the knowledge I can bring back to the people who trust me with their holidays. Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about me speaking on a stage. It’s about helping my clients make the right decision.
Could a Luxury Cruise Be Right for You?
If you’ve ever wondered whether a luxury cruise is worth it, or you’ve found yourself comparing different cruise lines and feeling unsure which one would suit you best, I’d love to help. We’ll talk about what’s important to you, compare the different options together and find the cruise that genuinely matches your style of travel.
After all, the best luxury cruise isn’t necessarily the one with the biggest marketing budget or the newest ship. It’s the one that feels as though it was made just for you.
