Gilly Bachelor, a seasoned cruise expert who has sent clients to all seven continents, including expedition cruises to Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galapagos Islands and the Northwest Passage, is about to embark on her very first National Geographic expedition cruise herself. For this adventure, she’s swapping formal wear for wellies as she explores the wild isles of the UK and Ireland.

Like many of her clients, Gilly is well-travelled, but like them, she hasn’t explored much closer to home. Expedition cruising around the British Isles is the perfect way to discover rugged landscapes, hidden wildlife and untouched islands practically on our doorstep.

The Expedition Itinerary

She will head to Edinburgh on 18th April and board the purpose-built National Geographic Endurance in Leith the following day. Over seven nights at sea, Gilly will explore remote islands, wildlife-rich landscapes and hidden corners of Scotland and Ireland, guided by National Geographic experts.

The expedition is made possible through Lindblad Expeditions, which partners with National Geographic to bring world-class expertise, guides, and photographers on every voyage. After disembarking in Dublin, she will be joined by her husband Brian for a few days of well-earned rest and relaxation.

National Geographic Expedition Cruise Ship
Life Aboard the Endurance

The National Geographic Endurance is stylish, cosy and exceptionally comfortable, but the magic isn’t in the ship itself, it’s what the ship allows you to do. Unlike traditional ocean cruising, the Endurance is a tool for exploration. Its famous x-bow design reduces spray and improves stability, making off-ship adventures safer and smoother, even in challenging waters.

Cabins are inviting, dining is relaxed but excellent, and public spaces are comfortable, giving you a welcoming base between days packed with adventure. Every detail on board, from lecture theatres to expedition tools, is designed to support discovery, guided by expert naturalists and photographers. The real excitement happens off the ship with Zodiac landings, wildlife spotting and exploring untouched landscapes few travellers ever see.

Highlights of the Journey
  1. Rathlin Island – puffins, seabirds and the quirky upside-down lighthouse.
  2. Isle of Skye – dramatic coastlines, charming villages and medieval history.
  3. Loch Ewe and Inverewe Garden – subtropical gardens and Scotland’s Big Five wildlife.
  4. Shetland Islands – Viking heritage, ancient ruins and wild island trails.
  5. Orkney – historic sites, remote Zodiac landings and Scapa Flow harbour.
A Different Side of Travel

Travelling with fellow travel agent Jo Mooney, Gilly is embracing a style of cruising she has never experienced firsthand. Adventure, curiosity and shared discovery take centre stage over formal dinners and ballroom evenings.

Over the coming weeks, she will share her insights about what expedition cruising is really like, life onboard, the incredible places visited, and whether this style of travel is worth it. Even for seasoned travellers, the British Isles offer an unforgettable adventure right on our doorstep.

Stay tuned!
