We’re thrilled to share some genuinely exciting news for anyone with Thailand on their travel wishlist: from October 2026, there will finally be a direct flight option from London Heathrow to Phuket!
Virgin Atlantic will be launching this route on 18th October 2026, operating three times weekly throughout the winter season on their Boeing 787-9 aircraft. What makes this particularly significant is that it’s currently the only direct service connecting Heathrow with Thailand’s largest island, which means no more lengthy layovers in Bangkok or other hubs—just a straight shot to one of Southeast Asia’s most beloved destinations.
Why This Matters for Your Thailand Travel Plans
For years, getting to Phuket has meant either connecting through Bangkok or choosing alternative airports. This new route changes the game entirely, shaving hours off your journey and removing the hassle of transfers. Whether you’re planning a winter sun escape, a family adventure, or simply dreaming of turquoise waters and limestone karsts, this direct service makes Thailand more accessible than ever.
The timing couldn’t be better either. The October launch perfectly captures Thailand’s peak season when the weather is glorious, the seas are calm, and the island is at its very best. It’s ideal for those seeking to escape the grey British winter for something altogether more vibrant.

Beyond the Beach
While Phuket’s stunning beaches are undoubtedly the main draw, there’s so much more to discover. The island offers a rich culinary scene that goes far beyond pad thai (though you’ll find excellent versions of that too), cultural treasures like the Golden Buddha at Wat Khao Rang, and the wonderfully atmospheric old town with its Sino-Portuguese architecture and colourful shophouses.
What we particularly appreciate about Phuket as a base is its connectivity. The island serves as an excellent jumping-off point for exploring the wider region—whether that’s island-hopping to Phi Phi, venturing north to the quieter shores of Khao Lak, or discovering the dramatic limestone cliffs of Krabi. With improved flight connections and established ferry services, creating a multi-destination Thai adventure has never been easier.

Planning Your Phuket Escape
If you’re already mentally packing your bags, packages through Virgin Atlantic Holidays will be available from 30th October 2025, with flight-only bookings opening slightly later on 26th November 2025. This gives you plenty of time to plan ahead for those precious 2026 holiday dates.
The beauty of working with a travel expert (hello!) is that we can look beyond just flights and accommodation. Whether you’re after a luxury beachfront resort, a boutique eco-property tucked into the jungle, or a family-friendly hotel with all the amenities, there are options to suit every style and budget. And if you want to venture beyond Phuket itself—perhaps adding a few nights in Bangkok, some island time in Koh Samui, or a cultural experience in Chiang Mai—we can weave together an itinerary that makes the most of your time in Thailand.

Let’s Make It Happen!
These new direct flights are a genuine game-changer for Thailand travel, and we’re already fielding enquiries from clients eager to take advantage of this convenient new route. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a Thailand veteran, having this direct option opens up exciting possibilities.
