Booking a Last-Minute Summer Holiday? Check This Before You Book
Dreaming of escaping the British summer and booking a last-minute getaway? You’re not alone.
We’re seeing more families leaving their summer holiday decisions later than ever, whether they’re waiting for work commitments to settle, hoping to find availability, or simply deciding they deserve some sunshine after all.
But before you press “book”, there’s one important check we always recommend: make sure every traveller’s passport is valid.
Over recent weeks, our free travel helpline has been busy with frantic calls from families who have found the perfect last-minute holiday to Turkey, only to realise their child’s passport is out of date.
Whilst adults renewing an eligible passport may be able to use the 1 Day Premium service, this option is only available for adult passport renewals. Children’s passports cannot use this same-day service, although a 1 Week Fast Track service is available for child passport applications. Any application can also take longer if HM Passport Office requires additional checks or information.
This is why, as part of our booking process, we ask to see passports before confirming travel.
It might seem like a small detail, but we’ve stopped several last-minute bookings from going ahead because a passport wasn’t valid. An online booking service won’t check this for you, and once a holiday is confirmed, it can be too late to avoid losing money.
With many package holidays, including those booked with major operators such as Jet2holidays, cancellation charges can be 100% once confirmed. Unfortunately, travel insurance would not usually cover cancellation because of an invalid passport, as checking passport validity is the traveller’s responsibility.
Our advice is simple: book your spontaneous getaway, but make sure all the important checks have been completed before committing.
Our Expert Tips For Booking A Last-Minute Holiday
- Be flexible with dates and destinations
The more open you are, the more options you’ll have. Changing your departure date by even a day or two, flying from a different airport, or considering an alternative destination can sometimes unlock better value.
- Know what’s essential and what’s negotiable
Before searching, decide what really matters. Is it a beachfront location, a kids’ club, a waterpark, a short transfer, or a particular board basis?
Knowing your priorities means we can quickly focus on the holidays that genuinely fit your needs.
- Act quickly, but don’t rush
Great last-minute holidays can disappear quickly, but taking time to check the details can save a lot of stress later.
Transfers, luggage allowances, flight timings, seat reservations, room types and entry requirements are all things that can be overlooked when booking in a hurry.
- Double-check passports and entry requirements
This is the big one. Before booking, check that every traveller has a valid passport and that you understand the entry requirements for your destination.
Different countries have different rules around passport validity, and resolving an issue close to departure can be stressful, particularly when travelling with children.
- Make sure you have travel insurance in place
Last-minute holidays often need to be paid for in full at the time of booking, meaning any changes or cancellations could result in significant costs.
We always recommend arranging comprehensive travel insurance as soon as your holiday is booked, including appropriate cancellation cover and medical protection whilst you’re away.
Travel insurance isn’t a legal requirement, but it’s something we always remind our clients about because protecting your holiday investment matters.
- Be realistic about price
Last minute doesn’t always mean cheap. During peak periods, especially the school summer holidays, availability becomes limited and the best value options often go first. Our role is to help you understand what represents good value, rather than simply finding the lowest price.
Sometimes spending slightly more on the right holiday can save disappointment later.
- Be ready to secure your holiday
Last-minute holidays usually cannot be held, so if you find the right option, you’ll need to be ready to book and pay to secure it.
