Life Is Short. So What’s Still On Your Bucket List?

Life is short. It is one of those phrases we hear so often that it risks becoming background noise, but clichés exist for a reason. The older I get, the more I realise just how true it is.

At a certain stage in life, you seem to become increasingly surrounded by reminders that time isn’t unlimited.

Friends and family receive difficult diagnoses, people begin facing health challenges that perhaps once felt a very long way off, and conversations gradually shift towards knee replacements, hip replacements and bodies needing a little more maintenance than they once did.

Then comes another familiar saying… we’re not getting any younger.

This isn’t meant to sound gloomy because, in many ways, I think there is something positive in that realisation. It does make you stop and think about the things you’ve always wanted to do. The experiences you’ve talked about for years, the places you’ve always dreamed of seeing and those moments you’ve promised yourself you’ll get around to “one day”.

The problem is that one day has a habit of quietly becoming another year.

This week I managed to tick something off my own bucket list and it reminded me why these things matter.

For well over a decade, my family and I have enjoyed wonderful days at Royal Ascot. It has always been one of those special occasions where you feel completely spoiled, with fantastic hospitality, great company and lots of memories being made along the way. However, I hadn’t actually been back since losing my Dad in 2022 and then my Mum in 2025, so returning this year felt quite emotional in ways I hadn’t fully expected.

For years I had always wanted the opportunity to experience the Royal Enclosure but had never had the chance. This year I finally did.

It was magical.

I spent the day with my husband, sister and brother-in-law and it was full of all the things that really matter, lots of laughter, lots of love and making more memories together. It was also made slightly sweeter by somehow backing the winner in the first four races out of seven. Brian’s luck wasn’t quite as impressive!

As I was reflecting on the day afterwards, it struck me that we spend so much of our lives putting things off because we assume there will always be more time. We tell ourselves that next year will be better, work will be quieter, life will slow down or there will be a more convenient moment.

Sometimes there is. Sometimes there isn’t.

Travel sits on so many people’s bucket lists, and we hear it all the time. People tell us they have always wanted to see the Northern Lights, go on safari, take the family to Australia, cruise through Alaska or experience that dream trip they have talked about for years.

What we have learned over time is that bucket lists are rarely just about destinations. They’re about experiences, about creating memories and about spending precious time with the people we love while we still can.

We are never about pushy selling and we’re certainly not suggesting you immediately pack a suitcase and book something tomorrow. However, if there is something you’ve been mulling over for a while, perhaps now is the time to have the conversation.

Share it with us and we’ll happily help you explore the possibilities. If we can make it happen, wonderful. If we can’t quite make it work right now, then at least you’ll know you’ve given it a good shot rather than wondering “what if?” years down the line.
