It’s the 2nd of March, and we’re now back on the road as we head to Rorke’s Drift. Both Brian and I were genuinely sad to leave Montusi Mountain Lodge. What a wonderful spot this has turned out to be. We drove up from Johannesburg, and the journey was simply beautiful, winding through ever-changing landscapes until we reached this peaceful haven in the Northern Drakensberg.

The lodge is an absolute gem: a family-run retreat tucked into uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with incredible, uninterrupted views of the famous Amphitheatre escarpment. It’s remote in the very best way, surrounded by wilderness, open gardens, and pure tranquillity, yet it feels instantly welcoming.

Our Suite with a View…

We loved our little bungalow, one of the free-standing suites. Inside, there’s a cosy bedroom, a separate lounge area, a handy kitchenette with tea and coffee facilities and a minibar, plus a spacious en-suite bathroom. But honestly, it’s the private terrace that steals the show. There’s also a two-bedroom, two-bathroom option perfect for families.
The magnificent panoramic views of the Amphitheatre are simply breathtaking. Waking up to that dramatic mountain skyline every morning feels like a privilege. The suite itself is spacious and beautifully positioned for privacy, perfect for those jaw-dropping vistas and quiet moments with a cup of coffee in hand.

Guided Walks & Mountain Magic…

Each day includes a complimentary guided walk on the 1,000-hectare estate, and these were true highlights of our stay. For our first hike, we joined Victor, who led us to the waterfall cave. He was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, sharing stories about the landscape and its wildlife along the way. Halfway through, we paused for tea and homemade cake in the mountains, which was such a thoughtful touch and a real treat.
The following day, we headed in the opposite direction towards the Bushman’s Cave, home to fascinating ancient rock art, before continuing up to the summit of Montusi. The trails are varied and scenic, offering just the right level of adventure without ever feeling overwhelming.

Dining in the Heart of the Drakensberg…

Because of its wonderfully remote setting, all meals are taken in the main lodge, and they’ve been excellent every time. The food is hearty yet imaginative, using fresh local ingredients with authentic South African flair. Generous portions, beautifully presented.
On our first night, we dined outside under the thatched roof, soaking in the soft evening light and mountain views. Last night turned wet and windy (typical Drakensberg weather) so we moved indoors beside the cosy fireplace. Today is bright again, though still breezy. The mountains certainly keep you on your toes.

Genuine Hospitality (and Some Very Cute Residents)…

The owners are warm, hands-on, and genuinely passionate about what they’ve created here. That personal touch makes all the difference. We also loved meeting the resident animals: Oscar the charming lodge cat; Western, the energetic new puppy; Badger, lively and playful; and AJ (Action Jones), the scruffy but utterly lovable dog who is clearly part of the family. They add such character and warmth to the experience.

Time to Relax and Explore…

After our hikes, I treated myself to a relaxing spa treatment, which was just what I needed. Other guests have been horse riding and quad biking, while there’s also tennis, swimming, birdwatching, mountain biking, and even nearby golf. The guest mix has been lovely — mainly visitors from France, Germany, and the UK, alongside a small touring group, families, and couples. It’s the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure; everyone finds their own rhythm here.

A film set…

Yesterday we watched the 1964 classic Zulu right here at the lodge. It was fascinating to see the Amphitheatre so clearly in the background, knowing it was filmed in this very region of the Drakensberg. It made the experience even more poignant, especially when our host Lindsay shared that her grandfather was an extra in the film.

Final Thoughts…

We have truly loved our time here. It’s been scenic, restorative, and filled with small, meaningful moments. The mountain air, homemade cake on a hike, lovely dinners, and sunrise views that stop you in your tracks.

If you’re looking for a special place in the Drakensberg, whether for romance, a family escape, or simply to recharge, I wholeheartedly recommend Montusi Mountain Lodge. It’s more than just accommodation; it’s a little slice of paradise.

We were sad to leave… but next time, we’ll stay longer. But for now, we’re moving on to Fugitives’ Drift Lodge, you can read all about my experience here.
