Have you been dreaming of the palm-lined boulevards in Los Angeles, magical days in Orlando, or crisp autumn strolls through Central Park? Well, whether your American adventure is just around the corner or a little further down the line, there’s one essential thing every British traveller needs before jetting off to the States… an ESTA.

  • What’s an ESTA – and Why Do I Need One?
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is a digital travel permit that allows UK passport holders to visit the United States for tourism, business, or transit purposes – without the need for a full visa. It’s part of the U.S. Visa Waiver Programme and it’s a non-negotiable requirement.

Don’t have an ESTA? Then you can say ESTA-la vista to your USA trip because without documentation, you won’t be allowed entry into the US. In fact, you won’t even be allowed to board your flight without it!

  • Here’s the Big Update:
At present, applying for an ESTA costs $21. However, the U.S. authorities have announced that this fee will soon increase to $40. While an exact date for the increase hasn’t been confirmed, it’s coming – and that means time is of the essence.

If you’re planning to travel to the U.S. anytime in the next 6 to 12 months, now is a great time to get your paperwork in order. Whether it’s a magical family holiday to Walt Disney World, a shopping weekend in New York City, or that bucket-list road trip through the American West, applying now could save you money.

  • How Long is an ESTA Valid For?
Once approved, your ESTA is valid for two years (or until your passport expires – whichever comes first). During this time, you can travel to the U.S. as many times as you like, for trips of up to 90 days each. It’s worth noting that if you get a new passport during that two-year window, your ESTA becomes invalid and you’ll need to apply again with your new passport details.
  • Beware of Scams – Only Use the Official Website
Sadly, the internet is full of third-party websites that offer to apply for your ESTA on your behalf – often charging double or even triple the actual cost. Some look official, but they’re not. Others are outright scams that never even submit your application.

I’ve seen far too many travellers caught out this way – and I’d hate for that to be you.

For your own peace of mind (and your wallet!), always apply directly through the official U.S. government site:
https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov

It’s a straightforward process – no need to pay anyone extra to do it for you.

  • Don’t Book Until You’re Approved

While most British travellers are approved for an ESTA without any issues, there are some circumstances that can lead to a denial – so it’s wise to wait until you’ve received your authorisation before confirming flights or accommodation.

Some of the more obvious reasons for refusal include having a criminal record or previously overstaying a visa in the U.S. But others are less well-known – such as having visited certain countries in recent years.

For example, if you’ve travelled to Cuba since January 2021, you may no longer be eligible for the Visa Waiver Programme and will need to apply for a full U.S. visa instead.
