Here’s my advice, when planning your family holiday, honed after many years of travelling with my four stepchildren… and now our first grandchild!

- If they’re old enough, get the kids involved – having everyone’s input has always led to the best holidays, as everyone feels heard, and invested in making the holiday a success from the outset;
- BUT agree how much you’d like to spend on your family holiday. I remember finding the kids looking at The Brando (Tahiti French Polynesia), yes, it did fit the ‘all inclusive’ bit of the brief… but I wasn’t intending to remortgage the house;
- Write a ‘wish list’ and agree what are your family ‘must-haves’ and those things that are nice to have, but not critical;
- Check the basics – does everyone have a valid passport (the post-Brexit rules for travel to the EU are widely misunderstood!), what are the destination entry requirements i.e. visa, vaccination etc. Covid is now less of an issue but there are still a few destinations with restrictions so it’s important to double-check.
- Plan as far ahead as you can, this is particularly important if you’re a larger family as two-bedroom hotel suites, or family rooms are always in limited supply;
- Make your budget go further by securing a free child place, again booking early is helpful here;
- Make sure everyone has full travel insurance and if you are travelling to the EU a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card which replaced the EHIC).
- And once you’ve booked make a holiday schedule, this is particularly important if your family holiday is to Orlando!
