Christmas has always been a special time for me — full of warmth, tradition, and family. This year will be different, as it’s my first without Mum and Dad.
I knew I wanted to mark it in a way that would feel both comforting and memorable. With my large extended family, we’ve got plenty planned together in the run-up to Christmas and over New Year — so there will still be laughter, love, and shared traditions at home.
But for the heart of the holiday, I’ll be somewhere completely new… on a Danube river cruise.
Why the Danube?
I wanted somewhere magical, full of Christmas spirit and beauty, with that extra sparkle that only Europe in December can offer. This river cruise starts and ends in Budapest, and takes in fairy-tale towns, bustling Christmas markets, and serene stretches of the river.
It’s the perfect blend of festive atmosphere, comfort, and discovery (it’s my first time in Budapest) a way to gently create new memories while still carrying old ones with me.
And here’s a travel tip — when I booked, there were only two cabins left in the category I wanted. That’s how popular Christmas river cruises are, so it really does pay to plan early.
What I’m Looking Forward To:
- Budapest’s festive glow – wandering its twinkling markets and gazing at the illuminated Parliament building from the ship.
- Vienna at Christmas – mulled wine at Schönbrunn Palace, surrounded by music and laughter.
- A Gala Christmas Day Dinner – fine dining on board with new friends, in a setting that feels truly special.
Making Space for Joy
This trip is my way of gently turning the page. It’s not about replacing old traditions, but adding a new one — a reminder that Christmas can evolve and still be lovely.
With family time before and after, and this magical cruise at the centre, I’ll get to enjoy the very best of both worlds.
Your Own Christmas Away
Whether you want a change of scenery, an adventure, or simply to try something different for the season, there’s a world of options. From river cruises to snowy escapes, the magic of Christmas is out there waiting for you. I’ve curated a collection of my favourite recommendations for Christmas away.
If this year has taught me anything, it’s that the best trips are the ones you plan early — so you can get exactly what you want and look forward to it for months.
