This morning on BBC Breakfast (15 August 2025), there was a feature on travelling abroad for dental work and cosmetic surgery. It highlighted that while there are some excellent clinics overseas, there are also risks – and the importance of researching your chosen provider thoroughly.
What wasn’t mentioned, however, is something I see as a vital part of this conversation: most standard travel insurance policies will not cover you if you have complications while abroad after planned surgery.

That means if something goes wrong – whether during the procedure or while you’re recovering – your policy may not pay out, leaving you with potentially eye-watering medical bills overseas. This is why so many people in this situation head back to the UK mid-recovery to be treated by our NHS rather than paying private healthcare costs in another country.
In my role as a travel agent, I always take the time to talk through clients’ plans when they book a holiday. On more than one occasion, I’ve discovered clients were heading abroad for dental work, hair transplants, or cosmetic surgery – and not one of them knew they needed specialist medical travel insurance.
If you’re thinking of combining travel with any planned medical treatment abroad, here’s what to do:
- Tell your travel agent– so they are fully aware of the situation should you need additional support whilst you are away.
- Check your travel insurance policy wording carefully– don’t assume you’re covered.
- Research specialist travel insurance– do this before you book your procedure, so you understand the full cost of your trip!
Travel should be about wonderful experiences, not unexpected emergencies. By having the right insurance in place, you can protect both your health and your finances – and enjoy your trip with peace of mind.
