Two Nights to Reset at The Residence Boutique Hotel

There is something rather wonderful about building in intentional pause time at the start of a big journey, and our two-night stay at The Residence in Johannesburg has been exactly that. A deep breath before the adventure continues.

Arrival Was Effortless From The Start

We landed just before midday yesterday and were through the airport swiftly. Passport control was quick, luggage was already circling by the time we reached the carousel (always a small miracle after a long-haul flight), and within minutes we were stepping out into the sunshine.

We’d arranged for the hotel to send a driver, and this did not disappoint. Joe was waiting as we exited arrivals, a warm smile in place. A short walk to the car park and we were settled into a very comfortable Toyota Land Cruiser. Waiting for us inside was a welcome letter, chilled water, refreshing towels and sweets. It was such a thoughtful touch after a long flight, and it immediately set the tone.

Around 30 minutes later, we pulled into the leafy streets of Houghton and arrived at The Residence, a serene five-star haven tucked away from the city’s bustle.

Suite 18: Space, Light & Grandeur

We were very kindly upgraded to Suite 18, and what a treat it was.

The suites here are generously proportioned and individually styled, and ours felt more like a private apartment than a hotel room. High ceilings, rich fabrics, gold mirrors, chandeliers and curated African accents created that beautiful blend of classic European grandeur with unmistakable African soul.

Our suite opened onto a private balcony overlooking the gardens. The bathroom was wonderfully indulgent — deep soaking tub, spacious walk-in shower and dual vanities — calm, elegant and exactly what you want when slightly travel-weary.

With just 18 suites and rooms in total, the hotel feels intimate and personal.

A Gentle First Afternoon

After check-in, I was treated to a complimentary foot massage (Brian was simply too exhausted at that point). It was the perfect grounding ritual after hours in the air.

We enjoyed a relaxed lunch, followed by something even more important: a proper snooze.

By evening we felt human again.

Pre-dinner drinks were served in the elegant piano bar, where a live pianist played softly in the background. Around 20 guests dined that evening, creating a relaxed yet refined atmosphere.

We opted for just a main course (there is only so much aeroplane food one can recover from). Beforehand, we were served complimentary courgette velouté and homemade rolls.

Brian chose Thai green curry. I opted for local fish in a lime curry sauce, it was fragrant, balanced and absolutely delicious. No dessert for us, though Brian had coffee and we were then presented with homemade chocolates revealed dramatically from swirling mist. A theatrical and charming touch.

Today: Reset in the Best Possible Way

This morning began with a gym session, just enough to shake off the last of the travel fog, and was promptly followed by a leisurely breakfast overlooking the gardens.

We then spent a couple of hours catching up on emails by the pool (this is very much a working-reset stop for us before a long drive tomorrow). Staff appeared instinctively with fresh coffee, chilled water and even homemade ice lollies while we worked from our loungers.

And then came the highlight: three full hours in the spa.

Exfoliation, massage and facial… utterly blissful. The spa here is calm, restorative and deeply relaxing rather than showy. Exactly what you want in a boutique retreat.

The Setting

The grounds are simply beautiful. Multiple pools (one heated, one cold), deeply comfortable loungers, generous shaded areas and a large fire pit that transforms the garden at night.

The hotel is the perfect blend of tradition and African flair. Think chandeliers and gilt mirrors softened by warm textures and local touches. It is timeless rather than trendy.

If I’m being completely honest, there are tiny areas where the property feels slightly tired around the edges, but this is far outweighed by the grandeur, comfort and genuinely exceptional service. The warmth of the team is what elevates the entire experience.

For our clients, we often include a private driver and a half-day tour of key Johannesburg sights during a stay here. It’s also brilliantly located near Nelson Mandela Houghton Estate, making it ideal for exploring while still retreating to tranquillity at the end of the day.

The Perfect Two-Night Pause

The Residence Boutique Hotel is not about flash or scene. It is about space, privacy, elegance and heartfelt hospitality.

For a short two-night stay — particularly at the start or end of a South African itinerary — it is quite perfect.

Would I hesitate to recommend it? Not for a second.
