For many years, the classic “family holiday” has meant a week in the sunshine at a beach resort with all inclusive. Sun, sea, pools, cocktails, kids’ clubs – it ticked a lot of boxes. And let’s be clear: that’s still a hugely popular choice with our clients. But there’s also a growing number of our families who are coming to us as they want to explore something different. Instead of a week or two on the sun lounger, they’re looking for adventure, exploration and new experiences.

This summer, another family looked beyond the typical Mediterranean beach holiday and chose the lush landscapes of Madeira instead. A week based in Funchal gave them the chance to enjoy comfort, adventure, and plenty of family time in a setting that feels both exotic and easy to reach.

The Journey

Flying direct from Birmingham to Funchal with Jet2, the trip began with a smooth morning departure and a private transfer straight to the hotel — no stress, no waiting around. Within a few hours of leaving the UK, they were unpacking in the sunshine.

The Stay

Their base was The Residence Porto Mare, a family-friendly hotel that blends self-catering flexibility with resort-style facilities. Staying in two studios on a bed and breakfast basis, they had space to spread out while also enjoying hotel amenities. With outdoor and indoor pools, lush subtropical gardens, and multiple on-site dining options, the property struck the perfect balance between relaxation and convenience. Its location in Funchal meant the island’s highlights were never far away.

Why This Holiday Felt Different

Madeira offered a refreshing twist on the classic family escape. Days alternated between poolside downtime and active exploring:

  • Levada walks through the island’s famous irrigation channels, with waterfalls and panoramic views.
  • A cable car ride high over Funchal, followed by the island’s traditional wicker toboggan run back down the hillside.
  • A visit to the botanical gardens, bursting with exotic plants.
  • A dolphin and whale-spotting boat trip, giving the children a real sense of adventure out on the Atlantic.

Evenings were just as flexible — sometimes a simple family dinner on-site, other nights a wander into Funchal’s lively restaurant quarter.

Final Thoughts

This trip showed how a family holiday can feel both familiar and new. With sunshine, swimming pools, and good food, it delivered all the ingredients of a traditional summer break — but Madeira’s landscapes and experiences added an extra layer of adventure. For families ready to go beyond “just the Med,” this island is a perfect alternative.
