Recent reports have highlighted a small but increasing number of ESTA approvals for travel to the US being revoked at the last minute, often with no explanation. While we haven’t seen any issues with our clients so far, it’s clear that travellers themselves need to stay alert — this is an issue that can catch anyone off guard.

ESTA is intended to streamline travel to the United States, but these sudden revocations show that even approved travellers are not entirely guaranteed smooth passage. The good news is that, in every case reported so far, reapplication has resulted in the ESTA being granted, meaning travel can proceed. However, the process can be extremely stressful, particularly if travellers are already at the airport or in transit, and there are additional costs to consider.

A new problem: applications stuck in “pending”

We are now seeing an increasing number of applications sitting in a pending status for several weeks. Previously, decisions would typically be made within 24 hours, but delays are becoming more frequent, and there is currently no way to expedite them.

This means you must plan ahead. Apply early — especially during busy travel periods — and avoid leaving this step until the week you travel.

Don’t forget: new passport = new ESTA

Your ESTA is electronically linked to your passport. If you renew your passport, you will need to apply for a brand-new ESTA, even if your previous approval was still valid. This applies across the board for all visas and visa waivers.

How to take responsibility for your ESTA
Travellers should:
  • Visit the official ESTA website
  • Select “Check Existing Application”
  • Enter your passport details and application number
  • Confirm your status at least 96 hours before travel, and again 24 hours before departure

If your ESTA has been revoked, is pending without resolution, or is missing from the system, reapply immediately — processing is not instant, and delays can lead to missed flights.

While ESTA revocations and long pending times remain relatively rare, they’re increasing. Travellers shouldn’t panic, but neither should they assume everything will automatically be fine. Being proactive is the only way to avoid last-minute stress and ensure a smooth journey.

Travel is supposed to be enjoyable — it’s worth taking the extra precautions to make sure it stays that way. If you need more support, we run a free advice service, you can book an appointment here.
